8 Ways to Not Go Broke This Holiday Season

Is your inbox groaning under the weight of a thousand gift-guide emails? Did you intend to set aside money for the holidays this year and then, yet again, forget? Do you hate everyone who talks about their “holiday budget”?

Welcome to the club! We’re a big one: Last year, 74 percent of Americans reported that they failed to budget adequately for the holidays. And here we are again.

To me, December is about damage control. You’re going to eat too much and drink too much and spend too much money — just embrace it.

But there’s a difference between getting into the holiday spirit and no-holds-barred hedonism, and that usually comes down to strategy. Sure, you could spend with abandon and atone for it in January — I’ve done that before, and it makes New Year’s Day that much more painful. Or you could make 2019 a little easier on yourself and come up with a plan.

I asked several financial experts for their recommendations on handling the holidays, especially for those who haven’t budgeted as much as they hoped (or, you know, at all). Happy Black Friday weekend, and good luck out there

1. Pick a limit, ideally no more than 1.5 percent of your annual income.

Choosing a dollar limit for gift shopping is an obvious step, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In an ideal world, you’d come up with that number at least a few months in advance so you could save accordingly, but oh well — there’s always next year.

For now, look at what’s in your bank account, subtract your “needs” (fixed monthly costs like housing, food, etc.) and then see what’s left over. Realistically, how much of that can you put toward gifts, what other holiday expenses should you account for (like travel, a New Year’s Eve dinner, an outfit to wear to said New Year’s Eve dinner, etc.)?

As a guiding principle, Emily Purdon, a certified financial planner and member of the Financial Therapy Association, recommends spending no more than 1 to 1.5 percent of your annual income on gifts.

But that number means nothing if you don’t have it in cash right now, says Manisha Thakor, the founder of MoneyZen and VP of Financial Education at Brighton Jones. “Do not spend any money on holiday gifts that will require you to take on debt (or increase any debt you already have),” she says.

Your goal is to work with what you have this very minute — not with your next paycheck, your anticipated bonus, or the money you hope to save by not drinking in January.

2. Get on the same page as your loved ones so you don’t under- or over-gift.

Talk to the people in your present-exchanging circle and come up with a plan. “I always recommend having a pre-holiday conversation with your family that’s like, ‘Hey guys, how do we want to handle gifts this year?’” says Alexa Von Tobel, the author of Financially Forward: How to Use Today’s Digital Tools to Earn More, Save Better, and Spend Smarter. “The most awkward dynamic in buying gifts is that you don’t want it to be uneven.

When everyone decides together that you’re going to keep things under $100, or $50, or whatever, then it’s more fun and less stressful because no one has to worry about under-gifting somebody.”

You could also propose a group-gift arrangement, like pooling your money with your siblings to get your mom that $500 bag she really wants, doing a Secret Santa with your cousins, or pitching in for a family activity instead. “Maybe everyone would be happier if you just split the cost of a great dinner out,” says Von Toebel. “I guarantee you’ll find that everyone prefers to be economical, even if they make more money than you do — they still have their own expenses and financial goals.”

3. Go “narrow and deep” or “wide and shallow” — i.e. quality versus quantity.

Pick your approach: “Do you want to go ‘wide and shallow,’ and buy a variety of lower-cost gifts for a wide range of people, or ‘narrow and deep,’ and pick a select group and spend more on them?” asks Thakor. “The thing to avoid is going ‘wide and deep,’ as much as you might want to.”

Personally, I usually do a combination of the two. There are five people for whom I go “narrow and deep” (my immediate family members and significant other), and then a second tier of “wide and shallow” friends who will get, say, a book, a bottle of wine, a plant … you get it.

The trick is to figure out how many people fall into each camp and then, based on your finances (see No. 1), do the math on what “deep” or “shallow” means, cost-wise.

Depending on your situation, “deep” might be $100 per gift, while “shallow” is $20 — but you won’t know until you determine how many people are in each group and how much money you have to spread around between them.

4. Don’t let marketing tricks derail your gift-buying plan.

Retailers spend millions in research and ploys to put you in the shopping mood; don’t be fooled. One study found that when stores played Christmas music during the holidays, customers spent 34 percent more time browsing and were 17 percent more likely to buy something.

Meanwhile, Christmas scents have been found to boost sales. You can avoid these traps by shopping online (which also has its pitfalls — clicking is so easy!) and, more importantly, deciding what you’re going to buy before you shop. “Make a list of who you’re buying presents for, what you’re buying them, and how much you’re going to spend on each, and don’t let yourself deviate from it,” says Von Tobel. “Keep that list on hand and reference it whenever you’re tempted to go off-script.”

5. Get even more out of Black Friday and Cyber Monday with promos and online tools.

Between Black Friday (which now lasts for weeks, apparently) and all the other “special” sales accosting your brain this month, how do you know where to get the best deal? Apps like ShopSavvy allow you to scan product barcodes when you’re in a physical store and compare prices to other retailers nearby and online.

I also recommend Honey, a browser extension that automatically finds active promo codes and applies them to your online order — it really works.

In the meantime, you know that Coco Chanel quote about looking in the mirror and taking one thing off before you leave the house?

The same applies to shopping. “There’s almost always at least one item in your cart that you don’t need,” says Von Tobel. “Do a quick scan, see if you can take one item out, and then look at your holiday budget. Are you following the guidelines you set for yourself? If you buy this extra thing, how will it impact the rest of your spending?”

And finally, don’t wait around hoping for prices to get better. They might, but then again, they might not — and then you’ll get stuck.

Thirty-six percent of holiday debt-holders attributed their overspending to last-minute gifts, so start early. Cyber Monday is your friend.

6. Consider giving an experience, or something else that connects you to the recipient.

“I usually give three types of gifts: something homemade or edible, an experience, or a handwritten letter,” says Purdon. “I always take time to wrap and decorate the gifts, and I write a note and use a personalized seal and some colored wax.

These gifts have one thing in common: They show I took the time.” They also feel intimate and don’t need to cost much.

Research consistently shows that people derive more happiness from spending money on experiences rather than things, so it’s no surprise that giving experiences goes farther than material objects. A 2014 study found that “recipients of experiential gifts consequently feel closer to their gift giver than do recipients of material gifts, regardless of whether the gift is consumed together.”

In other words, buying someone a pottery class, concert tickets, or a restaurant certificate will probably give you a bigger bang for your buck than that sweater you were considering.

7. Use the “envelope method” or a pre-paid card to avoid debt.

As someone who will never be naturally adept at keeping track of money, I pay off my credit card multiple times a month (or even several times a week) to keep myself in line, especially when I’m buying things that I normally don’t — like Christmas presents. If you need an even tighter leash, Thakor recommends the old-fashioned “envelope method,” where you put your entire holiday budget in an envelope in cash; when the cash is gone, you holiday spending stops.

Alternatively, you could get a prepaid card that no longer works once you’ve hit your limit (here are some good options).

8. Don’t buy anything just to impress.

And finally, don’t try to keep up with the Joneses — chances are, they’re spending money they don’t have. In 2017, the average holiday-induced debt in the U.S. was $1,054, according to one survey; 29 percent of those debt-holders reported that they’d need five months or more to pay it off.

Do you really want to be paying for holiday gifts in May of 2019? Instead, use those months (and that money) to save up for next December — or at least think about it.

The Berkshire Hathaway of Pot Will Begin Trading on the NYSE Tuesday

Aurora Cannabis Inc. (ACB) has confirmed that its shares will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Oct. 23.

The Edmonton, Canada-based company, referred to in some circles as the Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK.B) of cannabis because of its successful track record investing in other firms, said its shares will trade under the ticker “ACB,” the same symbol it uses in its separate Toronto Stock Exchange listing.

Aurora will become the third licensed Canadian cannabis company to list in the U.S. after Canopy Growth Corp. (CGC) and Tilray Inc. (TLRY). Aphria Inc. (APH) also recently filed a request to list its shares on the world’s largest stock exchange, joining the likes of Aleafia Health Inc. (ALEAF), Namaste Technologies Inc. (N) and Alkaline Water Company Inc. (WTER), according to SmallCap Power.

“Our NYSE listing represents another important milestone that reflects our commitment to all stakeholders as we continue advancing domestic and international growth initiatives, which includes expanding our base of global institutional and retail investors,”

said Terry Booth, CEO of Aurora, in a press release.

Perfect Timing

Aurora, the third biggest cannabis stock behind Canopy and Tilray, is already well known to investors. Aside from being a major beneficiary of Canada ‘s recent legalization of recreational cannabis, the company has also benefited from unconfirmed reports that beverage giant Coca-Cola Co. (KO) wants to develop weed-infused beverages with it.

This positive publicity has helped to shine a light on Aurora’s business ventures. Going by the nickname “the Berkshire Hathaway of pot” certainly won’t do it any harm as it prepares to list on the world’s largest stock exchange.

Aurora tripled its revenues in the final quarter of its fiscal year and registered a sharp uptick in profits, thanks mainly to its various stakes in other marijuana producers.

As of Sep. 21, the company invested more than $700 million Canadian dollars ($534 million) in public companies in the sector, reported MarketWatch, including the likes of The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd (TGOD), Hempco Food and Fiber Inc. (HEMP), CTT Pharmaceuticals Holdings Inc. (CTTH) and Choom Holdings Inc. (CHOOF).

Benefits of Listing

These triumphs, coupled with speculation linking it with beverage giants, could see Aurora generate plenty of interest when its shares list on the NYSE. Until now, many U.S. investors have been put off buying the stock because the only way to do so is through over-the-counter-markets, which don’t have to comply with Securities and Exchange Commission requirements.

Once that barrier is removed, inflows could surge both from regular U.S. stock pickers and the many mutual funds and exchange-traded funds that only hold positions in companies trading on U.S. exchanges.

Make it Harder for Identity Thieves to Open New Accounts in Your Name

As of September 21, 2018, you can freeze and unfreeze your credit file for free. Credit freezes restrict access to your credit file, making it harder for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name.

Don’t confuse freezes with locks. They work in a similar way, but locks may have monthly fees.

If you want a free freeze guaranteed by federal law, then opt for a freeze, not a lock.

How Will These Freezes Work?

Contact all three of the nationwide credit reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. If you request a freeze online or by phone, the agency must place the freeze within one business day. If you request a lift of the freeze, the agency must lift it within one hour.

If you make your request by mail, the agency must place or lift the freeze within three business days after it gets your request. You also can lift the freeze temporarily without a fee.

Year-Long Fraud Alerts

A fraud alert tells businesses that check your credit that they should check with you before opening a new account. Starting September 21, 2018, when you place a fraud alert, it will last one year, instead of 90 days. Fraud alerts will still be free and identity theft victims can still get an extended fraud alert for seven years.

If you think a credit reporting agency is not placing a credit freeze or fraud alert properly, you can submit a complaint online or by calling 855-411-2372.

If you think someone stole your identity, visit the FTC’s website, IdentityTheft.gov, to get a personalized recovery plan that walks you through the steps to take.

FAQ’s

Q: What is the difference between a lock and a freeze?

Both a credit freeze and a credit lock limit access to your credit file so no one, including you, can open new accounts until you unlock your credit file. To be fully protected by a credit freeze or a credit lock, you must place a freeze or lock with all three nationwide credit reporting agencies.

However, with a lock, you do not get a PIN. Usually, you do not need to wait to lock or unlock your credit file, although the current Equifax lock can take 24 to 48 hours. You can lock and unlock your credit file from a computer or mobile device through an app, but not with a phone call.

A lock lasts only as long as you have an ongoing lock agreement with a credit reporting agency. In some cases, you need to pay a monthly fee to maintain your lock service. Credit reporting agencies can set and change lock fees at any time.

If you sign up for a lock, it’s hard to be sure what your legal protections will be if something goes wrong later. Credit freezes are now governed by federal law.

Q: Is there a limit on how many times you may freeze your account?

No, there is not a limit on how many times you may place a freeze your credit files.

Q: What do I need to do for this to get started?

Use the Credit Bureau Contacts in this blog post to make your request.

Q: When lifting a freeze temporarily for free, how long does the “Lift” stay in effect?

When you lift a freeze, you have two options. These two options are available to everyone in the country.

  1. You can lift a freeze permanently. If you do, it stays lifted until you place it again.
  2. You can lift a freeze temporarily. If you do, you must tell the credit reporting agency the length of time you want the freeze to be lifted; for example, “five days.” The credit reporting agency will put the freeze back on at the end of the time you chose.

Remember to contact each of the three national credit reporting agencies separately to lift and replace a freeze on your credit files.

What To Do When Debt Collectors Start Calling

If you’re in debt, chances are debt collectors will find you. That’s their job, after all. And when your financial past comes back to haunt you, it can be anywhere between a headache and a nightmare, depending on your situation.

Here’s what you should do when debt collectors start calling.
.

Make Sure It’s Not a Scam

Before anything, you want to make sure the debt collector is legit. There are so many scams out there. Here are a few red flags to keep in mind:

  • The “collector” is harassing: Legal site Nolo says that while regular debt collectors can be intimidating and rude, scammers are often outrightly abusive and threatening. They’ll usually threaten you with lawsuits or jail time.
  • They demand payment immediately: Again, regular collectors have time-sensitive requests, too. But a scammer will usually demand payment “today,” along with a threat.
  • They don’t accept many forms of payment: If they have a very specific request about how you should pay, that’s a big red flag. Most true collection agencies offer multiple methods of payment via their website, mailing address, or over the phone.
  • Someone answers immediately when you call: Most companies have phone systems. If someone answers right away when you call, it may be a scam. Also, be wary if you keep dealing with the same person. Legit companies have multiple agents.

It also helps to know the law. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act prevents collectors from a handful of practices, including calling before 8 am, calling after 9 pm, calling you at work, and harassing you with repeated calls.

Luckily, it’s pretty easy to expose these scams. Here’s how to do it:

  • Get written notice: Don’t discuss any debt until you get it in writing. The collector has to send you written notice of your debt within five days of initial contact. This notice includes the debt amount, name of the credit, and a description of your rights per the Fair Debt Collection Practices. CreditCards.com points out that legit collectors will usually send this before calling, anyway.
  • Ask these questions: What is the name, address, and phone number of the company you’re calling from? What is the name and address of the debtor you’re trying to reach? What are the last four digits of the debtor’s Social Security number?
  • Request a validation: According to CreditCards.com, you have within 30 days of first contact to request a validation of the debt, as long you do it in writing. Find sample letters here.

Check Your Credit Report

You should always request validation of your debt, but you should verify it yourself, too. This is why it’s important to keep tabs on your credit report—so you know what you owe. Of course, when you have a multitude of debts, this isn’t going to be fun. But it’s necessary.

If you haven’t already, request a free copy of your credit report. Second, learn how to read it. It’s probably also a good idea to make a list of your debts and come up with a repayment plan, but that’s a whole different post (thankfully, we’ve already written it). But knowing your debt payoff plan can help you prioritize the debt in question.

At the very least, though, you want to be familiar with the particular debt the collector is calling about.

Consider a Debt Management Plan

Repaying your debt in full is probably the most responsible thing to do. Getting out of debt is a great financial goal, and you can usually work with the collection agency to come up with a new payment plan. The collector might call it a debt management plan when they offer it.

Usually, it involves reducing your monthly payment and extending your payment term so you can eventually pay what you owe.

Of course, since the term is extended, you’ll be paying more in interest overall. But it’s something to consider if you want to get out of debt, and you may be able to work out a better interest rate in the process.

Know What Happens If You Settle

Aside from a debt management plan, the collector will probably offer a settlement–an amount lower than your original debt, with the promise that the debt will be closed if you pay that amount.

We’ve questioned the moral gray area of debt settlement before. But debt settlement is a widespread financial practice that exists, so we’ll report the facts and leave it to you to decide what’s best. Here’s what you should know before deciding to settle.

  • It’s not great for your credit: If you’re more than 90 days late, settling probably won’t impact your credit score too much. But let’s say you’re current on repayments and decide to settle instead. According to credit expert Todd Ossenfort, the collector doesn’t apply your payment immediately. They hold it while they attempt to negotiate a lower amount with the creditor. In the meantime, you’re missing payments and your score will “take a beating,” as he puts it.
  • You might have to pay taxes: In some cases, you’ll have to pay taxes on the amount of debt forgiven.
If you settle for at least $600 less than the original balance, you’ll probably receive a 1099-C “cancellation of debt” form from the IRS. They consider your forgiven amount taxable income.
  • There’s a statute of limitations on debt: Nolo explains how this works:

Don’t Unwittingly Revive the Time Period for a Lawsuit: If a debt collector contacts you about an old, time-barred debt, be very careful in what you say to the bill collector. If you say or sign anything that might be considered an acknowledgement of the validity of the debt (meaning, you agree that you owe that debt even if the statute of limitations to sue has expired), then you may have revived, waived, or extended the statute of limitations. Or, if you make an agreement with that bill collector to pay the old debt, then you also may revive, waive or extend the statute of limitations.

In some cases, a debt settlement can work for you. Just keep in mind—it’s often not as quick and painless as it seems. Know what you’re getting into before settling.

Try to Negotiate Your Settlement

In addition, it’s possible to negotiate your settlement amount. And if you’re interested in this option, there are a few strategies.

Credit expert John Ulzheimer suggests offering 10 to 15 percent of what you owe. Then, expect to settle in the neighborhood of 30 to 50 percent.

According to Bankrate, you can also suggest something called a payment for deletion. This isn’t illegal, but it’s often frowned upon, and many collection agencies may refuse.

The deal is: you pay, and they agree to call the credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) to remove the debt history from your credit report.

Get Everything in Writing

Whether you’re paying off the debt or settling on it, get your agreement with the collector in writing. Do this before making any payments.

Make sure the agreement includes full details of your deal, including the amount, terms, and any interest.

You also want to make sure you can prove your payment history.

Credit.com suggests paying with a certified check from your bank so that you have a record of the payment without giving them details about your account.

What Happens When You Ignore a Debt Collector

Let’s say you don’t want to settle or deal with the debt collector altogether. You have the option of ignoring them, and any of the following can happen:

  • They leave you alone (not terribly likely)
  • You’ll take a credit hit: your debts will appear as “in collection”
  • Your debt will grow: it’ll continue to accrue interest
  • A different agency will contact you
  • They sue you

It’s probably a better idea to deal with debt collectors head on. Because if they sue you, and they’re successful in court, their next step might be garnishing your wages.

Beware of Wage Garnishment

Yes, debt collectors can take money out of your paycheck, depending on the debt. But there are rules and there are limits, and those also depend on the type of debt you owe.

Again, with most debts, if you ignore debt collectors, they have to file a judgment against you with the court in order to garnish your paycheck. You have the option of contesting the judgment, trying to settle the debt, or declaring bankruptcy. If you ignore the judgment, they’re allowed to start taking money from your earnings.

If you owe money to the U.S. Department of Education for an unpaid student loan or the IRS for back taxes, they can garnish your paycheck without a judgment.

There are garnishment laws that limit the amount that can be taken from your paycheck. According to Alllaw.com, for judgments, creditors can’t garnish more than:

  • 25% of your disposable income, or
  • the amount that your income exceeds 30 times the federal minimum wage, whichever is less.

The Department of Education can’t garnish more than 15% of your pay. State laws might be different, depending on where you live.

But they have to at least protect you as well as the federal guidelines do—meaning the amount creditors can garnish with a judgment can’t be more than 25.

If debt collectors start calling, the most responsible thing to do is probably come up with a plan to pay it off. But there are a handful of options available, and a handful of consequences, depending on how you choose to deal with your debt.

Either way, you should know what you’re getting into before making any big decisions.

The Difference Between One Million and One Billion

Intellectually, we all know that a billion is much more than a million. You know, 1,000 times more.

We know that Jeff Bezos is a lot wealthier than Beyoncé for example and that Bill Gates’ wealth puts the Kardashians to shame.

But do you really know how much more 1 billion is than 1 million? Probably not. That’s because humans have a difficult time conceptualizing the difference in degrees between the two numbers. As Gizmodo reports:

While living and evolving in a so-called state-of-nature, our paleolithic ancestors had no need (i.e. no environmental pressures) to develop such a capacity.

Back then, and prior to the advent of a formal numbering system, early humans only really needed to get a basic sense of small batches of quantities, like the number of people in the clan, or how many animals might occupy a certain area.

That’s good news for people like Bezos and Gates because chances are if you knew how much money they actually have (well, how high their net worth actually is), you probably wouldn’t be too pleased.

To help put it in perspective, we’ll compare Bey and Bezos.

Beyoncé v.s. Bezos

The pop star had a net worth of $355 million, according to Forbes’ 2018 America’s Richest Self-Made Women list. That’s an almost unfathomably large number. And yet Bezos’s $164 billion net worth, based on Forbes’ 2018 list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, easily surpasses her (Bezos’s net worth fluctuates daily).

In fact, it would take more than 462 Beyoncés to get you to Bezos’s net worth. Bey doesn’t even make the top 400 list.

Now, what about 1 trillion? We’ll have to save that for another video.
